EIEE researcher awarded by the BBVA Foundation

For his contributions to intelligent image processing, which have improved the realistic representation of materials, leading to scientific publications, patents, and industrial products of significant international impact, Carlos received the Young Researchers in Computer Science Award 2024

Carlos Rodríguez-Pardo believes that “curiosity and a constant desire to learn” are fundamental tools in computer science research, as well as “knowing how to communicate your results to different audiences.” He developed his thesis while working for a startup as part of an industrial doctorate, and thanks to that, he has seen how his contributions have translated into tangible commercial products.

“I use artificial intelligence to combat climate change by researching how the climate will evolve as greenhouse gas emissions change, thus helping to develop better public policies for the economy, society, and the environment.” The work of the awardee, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Polytechnic University of Milan and Affiliated Researcher at EIEE, has focused on improving the realism and efficiency of virtually generated images, as well as reducing the manual intervention needed to create them.

He is now directing his research towards employing artificial intelligence to combat climate change. “We investigate how the planet’s climate will evolve as emissions of greenhouse gases change and how climate change will impact the economy and society,” he explains, with the aim of “helping to develop better public policies for the economy, society, and the environment.”
